Positano - '"Lemons Lemons Everywhere!"

Positano is known for its iconic beach, colourful beach umbrellas and waterfront cafes. But with just 1.5 hrs spent there, my impression of Positano is summed up in one sentence - "Lemons Lemons Everywhere!". In fact, besides the actual lemon fruits, many merchandises like handbags, lady dress, ceramic tableware, decorative jars, towels and many others have lemon prints and motifs.

Besides such products and merchandises are found in Positano, they are seen in many shops and outlets in places in Italy we visited earlier.

This region is famous for its giant, aromatic lemons, grown in terraced orchards on cliffs. These lemons are used to make the traditional Amalfi limoncello, a sweet lemon liqueur enjoyed worldwide.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta or the Assumption Church of Our Lady is another attraction in this town, which is prominently sited in the center of the town. Story has it that in the 12th century, a ship coming from the Eastern Mediterranean carrying the icon of the Virgin Mary and the Child, arrived in the stretch of sea in front of Positano and ran into a great storm that prevented it from continuing its journey. In the confusion, a voice from heaven was heard saying: " Posa, Posa". The Captain interpreted this as a manifestation of divine will. He turned the prow towards the beach, then the sailors landed and handed the icon of the Virgin to the locals. The people welcomed it with great joy and placed it in the ancient church dedicated to Saint Vito, the first patron saint of Positano.

A re-dedication of marriage vow of a couple was on-going during our visit to the Church.

Outside the Church, we were drawn to look closer at two sculptures placed on the compound. Inspirational captions for both sculptures are good for reflection and contemplation.
The sculpture, "Ikigat"
"One of the greatest challenges is to learn to accept and love ourselves, respecting every peculiarity that makes us unique and precious"
The sculpture, "Embrace"
"The biggest embrace of love you'll ever make is to embrace yourself completely. Then you'll realize you've just embraced the whole universe and everything and everybody in it"

There is another secret about Positano which I was not aware of until my daughter pointed out to me. Positano was where part of the movie, "Under the Tuscan Sun" were shot.
