Scenic Drive from Sorrento to Positano

We checked out from Towers Hotel Stabiae at Sorrento Coast in the morning of 08.10.2024 and continued to our next destination - Positano.

The distance from Sorrento to Positano is a mere 22Km. But we were warned in advance by our tour guide that this may take at least 1.5Hr or even longer to cover. This is because this road known as SS163 or Amalfi Drive is a narrow winding hillside road.

Along the route, our bus sometimes just inched along moving at snail pace in a long line of slow moving vehicles. At other times, the bus had to stop at narrow bends to make way for the approaching vehicles to pass through first before the bus moved on. Fortunately, this slow pace was compensated by the scenic views along the route. I was kept busy snapping some of the beautiful scenes!

Amalfi Drive is reckoned to be one of  the most scenic and famous coastal roads in the world, with a history that dates back to the Roman Empire. The road cuts through steep cliffs, terraced vineyards, olive groves and lush Mediterranean landscape overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Accordingly to our tour guide, buses which ply this route are subject to strict operating conditions. Buses cannot exceed certain maximum length and advance notice of the proposed drive along the route is to be given to the authority concerned.

Tour buses are not allowed to enter Positano because the town does not have sufficient carparks to accommodate them. We had to stop at a spot along Amalfi Drive which was still a fair distance from Positano. From the drop-off point, we had to walk all the way down along winding and narrow alleyways to reach the town below.

ground zero of Positano.
