Friends in Edmonton

Edmonton is 365Km from Jasper. The highway linking these two locations is superb for driving. It is almost a perfect straight road after the initial 150Km. It is no wonder that many Edmontonese drive to Jasper to spend their weekends.

Edmonton, an inland city is the capital of Alberta. Before coming here, I could only mention one thing about this city, i.e. the West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping mall in North America. The mall has a gross area of 490,000 sq. m (5.3 million sq. ft.), which is equivalent to almost 10 football fields!

I discovered later on that the idea of building this mall was conceived by four Jewish Iranian brothers in the late 1970's. The family was in Persian rug business in Iran. They decided to move to Canada in the 1960's to escape Islamic fundamentalism in Iran. Their concept of a shopping mall is shopping and entertainment all at the same time.

We had a good time catching up with Katy originally from KK, her husband Chad and son Ee-Han. They took us to a restaurant which is reputed to serve the best beef in town. It was good and the portion was big. We enjoyed the meal thoroughly and was satisfied even with a single plate portion shared with my wife. Canadians are great eaters!
