Alberta Legislature Building

We started our second day in Edmonton on 29 August with a visit to Alberta Legislature Building which is within walking distance from our hotel. We were told by Katy that free guided tours of the building are held a few time daily. We arrived there just before 10am which coincided with the beginning of the first tour.

Besides getting a glimpse of the interior of this historical building, the briefing was very informative. It covered the political history, daily routines of the Legislative Assembly, the parliamentary tradition, roles of all levels of the government - the Lieutenant Governor, Premier, Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly.

We took the High Level Bridge Streetcar from the Alberta Legislative Assembly to downtown of Edmonton. This Streetcar is not a public transport system but is operated and maintained by volunteers who love street railways. Its passengers are mostly tourists and visitors to Edmonton. The Streetcar in fact was a former Melbourne Tram brought here by the Edmonton Radial Rail Society. The Streetcar  runs on the rail track which at one time was part of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Edmonton Radial Rail Society is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history and technology of street railways with particular emphasis on Edmonton's Streetcar System.

The High Level Bridge Streetcar allows passengers to have fantastic view of the landscape, architecture and infrastructure of Edmonton City.
