End of a Life - When Least Expected

The news of Lucy Lee’s passing, which I received on the evening of 19 June 2025, came as a complete shock. Just three days earlier, on 16 June 2025, her son Nelson -  a Senior Engineer in my company - had applied for two days of emergency leave, informing the office that his mother had been rushed to the ICU due to sudden breathing difficulties.

What made this even more heartbreaking was that only a day before that, on 15 June 2025, I had received a warm Father’s Day greeting card from Lucy via WhatsApp - completely unaware that it would be her final message to me.
On the afternoon of 21 June 2025, I visited the Fook Luk Siew Funeral Parlour to pay my last respects and learned more about her sudden passing. She had been admitted to the ICU on the evening of 16 June after experiencing breathing problems. By Wednesday, 18 June, her condition had seemingly improved, and plans were made to transfer her to a general ward. Tragically, her health took a sudden turn for the worse the very next day, and she passed away that evening.

Ironically, the last time I visited Fook Luk Siew Funeral Parlour was on 12 August 2024, to pay my respects to my late Uncle Fen. I met Lucy there too, as she was also Uncle Fen’s niece (Read here).

Lucy, though generally a private and reserved person, did have her lighthearted moments. I fondly recall inviting her for a yamcha session in mid-January this year via whatsApp. She replied, "Sorry, yamcha will have to wait until after Chinese New Year. Christie and I are visiting the 'lost'." True to her heart, Lucy dedicated much of her time to evangelism and sharing the Gospel with pre-believers.

Life is indeed fragile and can change in the blink of an eye - often when least expected.

Rest in peace, Lucy. You will be fondly remembered.
