Parenting
Following the successful Marriage Enrichment Course held in October last year (Read here), the Church launched a Parenting Course in April 2014.
Parenting courses have emerged in response to growing concerns over child development, rising family stress, and the challenges brought about by changing social dynamics. The Church recognizes that as societies become more complex and traditional support systems - such as extended families - continue to weaken, many parents are left without adequate guidance to navigate the demands of modern parenting.
Research in psychology and education consistently highlights the vital role parenting plays in shaping a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development. Increasing rates of behavioral problems, academic difficulties, and mental health issues among children further underscore the need to support parents. In response, professionals in child development, education, and social work have developed structured, evidence-based parenting programs designed to equip parents with the knowledge and skills to raise confident, resilient, and well-adjusted children.
In addition to parents, the Church also encouraged members involved in the children’s Sunday School ministry to participate in the course.
Interestingly, the majority of attendees were still women - especially mothers - reflecting the ongoing need to involve more fathers and men in parenting and child development efforts.

Disappearance of MAS Flight MH370 - An Isolated Case?
Now, the government mouth piece is using the often-quoted words of "The missing MH370 flight is an isolated incident" to defend the handling of the case by their master.
When a group of Filipino armed rebels from Tawi-Tawi in southern Philippines entered Felda Sahabat 17, Kampung Tanduo in Lahad Datu in February 2013, certain official of the Malaysian security department used the "This is an isolated incident" to defend the handling of the case by Malaysian government.
When armed men made their way to a resort in Pulau Pom Pom in Semporna and shot dead a Taiwanese tourist before kidnapping his wife in November 2013, the phrase "This is an isolated incident" was again heard.
This is undeniably a phrase that was used more than it should be used. But then, we are famous for using ambiguous terms to defend what otherwise is an obvious case of deficient and inefficient governance Read Here.
One wonders whether we need ten more MAS planes to disappear before the authorities deemed serious enough to take pre-emptive actions?

Chapter 24: Jobs I did
| Letter from Radio Malaysia asking for a voice test. |
| A payment voucher for payment of RM22.50 for three sessions done in March 1972. |
Today, good handwriting is no longer a prerequisite for draftsmen. With all drafting done digitally, trying to market yourself based on beautiful lettering would likely earn you the label of a "has been". As for technical pens and lettering guides - they've become nothing more than relics fit for a museum.

Chapter 23: Celebrating Chinese New Year in the 1950s and Early 1960s

Breakfast that morning was simple but festive, usually consisting of Nian Kau, mandarin oranges and a variety of traditional goodies. Shortly after, my mother would gather the children to distribute angpau. Back then, the decorative red envelopes we see today - often provided by banks - didn't exist. Instead, angpau consisted of money wrapped in plain red paper.

Chapter 22: A Glimpse of My Old House
To the right of the staircase stood the entrance to the kitchen, which had a bare dirt floor. Near the entrance, a makeshift board - patched together from weathered timber planks and propped against the wall - served as a barrier to keep chickens, ducks, and the occasional dog from wandering inside.
Behind the family members shown in the above photograph, just out of frame, was a small balcony - about four feet by six feet - without railings. Despite its modest size, that balcony holds some of my fondest childhood memories. It was there, in that humble space, that my mother would often gather us to share old tales and folk stories. Her vivid storytelling captivated our young minds and sparked our imaginations. On warm evenings after dinner, we’d lie on our backs, staring at the clouds drifting by and watching birds, eagles, and bats glide silently across the twilight sky.
Every Chinese New Year morning, we kids would jump out of bed with excitement, rushing outside to light firecrackers and toss them across the dirt compound. The true spirit of the celebration came alive when the earth turned crimson with the remnants of spent firecrackers - a joyful, festive sight that still lingers in my memory.
The house itself was modest in both design and construction, built with materials that would be considered substandard by today’s standards. Yet, it was the place where I spent the greater part of my childhood and teenage years. Despite its humble appearance, it was a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
Every creaking floorboard, every patched wall, every improvised fixture had a story of its own - and together, they formed the backdrop of a life rich in simple joys and cherished moments. To this day, I carry with me many fond memories of that first home. Whenever I think of it, a deep sense of comfort and nostalgia washes over me, as if part of my heart still resides within its old wooden walls.

Chapter 21: If Only We Can Change History?
When Joseph was asked to prepare the family genealogy, I wonder - was there still a trace of bitterness? Did the recollections of past events, and how they might have shaped the course of his life, still linger?
