Wine Story in Cana (Kafr Kanna)

Wine making is as old as human civilization. Noah, a descendent of Adam was recorded as the first person intoxicated with wine. "One day, he drank some wine and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent." (Genesis 9:21). "Wine making" is also associated with Jesus. His first miracle is the turning of water into wine in a wedding celebration (John 2:1-11).

The Cana Wedding Church now occupies the site believed by the Catholic tradition to be where Jesus performed his first miracle.

These days, couples do not come here just to remember this miracle but to renew their marriage vows.

We did not come to renew our marriage vow in the church main hall. Instead we spent more time in an excavated old Jewish synagogue below the church. Archeological dig suggested that the old synagogue dates back to the 4th to 5th century AD.
An old stone container used to hold wine is on display in the unearthed old synagogue.
Remnants of the old Church.
Cana now known as Kafr Kanna is the home town of one of Jesus's disciple, Bartholomew referred to as Nathanael in John 21:2.

Business people in Kafr Kanna know how to take full advantage of this wine story in Cana. These days, tourists and visitors would likely pick up a few bottles of wine in one of the many wine shops before leaving Kafr Kanna.
