Remembering "The Italian Job"

Our accommodation at Via dei Pepi 65 in Florence is an intermediate unit of a terraced multi-storey apartment block. Being an old city, many of the multi-storey apartments are still "old fashioned" and not installed with lifts. Visitors must be prepared to endure the hassle of dragging luggages up and down multi-flight of stairs.

This inconvenience fortunately is compensated by its proximity to the many attractions in Florence.

Like many roadways in Florence, Via dei Pepi in front of our accommodation is equally narrow - just a single lane enough for one way traffic. But that would not deter drivers from parking their cars by the road side. I was amazed one night to see a saloon car parked just inch away from the wall without being an obstruction to moving traffic.

Instantly, I was reminded of "The Italian Job" - a 1969 movie about a well planned robbery. Soon after the robbery, the three Mini Coopers raced through the shopping arcades in the city, chased by the police, they sped across stairs, climbed on top of roof, drove through sewer and finally escaped from the pursuit.

Some Italians love small cars just like brand crazy individuals who crave to own a Lamborghini. This preference probably is due to the streets which are overwhelmingly narrow throughout all old cities.

Small Fiat in Noto and another small car in Modica.

In Ortigia, we had a glimpse of the types of police vehicles used by the local police during a Road Safety Campaign conducted for the school children in the town center - Lamborgrini, BMW and Fiat.
