Ragusa: Hilltop City

After Noto, we moved west for a distance of 54 Km to reach Ragusa - a hilltop city. Ragusa, a very old settlement built on a limestone hill at 1,000 ft plus elevation dates back to the second millennium BC. Similar to many western European countries, it had been occupied by many powers notably the Greeks, Romans and Arabs. It survived a major earthquake in 1693 but most buildings were destroyed with the exception of buildings of Baroque architecture and design.

We went to Ragusa for lunch rather than sightseeing per se. In the course of looking for a restaurant, we stumbled upon a 10 ft high old looking red wall with an arch opening at a dead end of an alleyway. The sign reads A Rusticana Cucina Casereccia.

We discovered later that this restaurant established in 1975 is set in an 18th century building. The restaurant was once used in 2007 for the shooting of a popular Italian TV series, "Inspector Montalbano" (Read here).
