Changing of Guard at STS

When the world was still reeling from the tragic crash of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore on 28 December 2014, another shockwave struck just days into the new year. On 7 January 2015, Paris was shaken by the Charlie Hebdo attack, a brutal rampage carried out by radicalized individuals. It was a stark reminder of how fragile peace can be, especially coming so soon after we had wished one another “Best of 2015.”

Back home in Kota Kinabalu, a quieter but significant change was unfolding at the Sabah Theological Seminary (STS). After 26 years of dedicated service, the founding Principal finally stepped down at the close of 2014, handing over the leadership baton to Dr. Wilfred John, who officially assumed the role on 6 January 2015. His installation marked not just a new chapter for STS, but also a healthy sign of growth and renewal.

Letting go is never easy. Too often, institutions stagnate because leaders cling to their positions, preventing innovation and necessary reform. When leadership turns into a personal fortress, the organization risks becoming an enclosed “institution” rather than a living, evolving movement. The transition at STS is therefore commendable, reflecting the wisdom of recognizing that no one is truly indispensable. Change, when embraced with humility and foresight, is what ensures continuity and relevance.
