Christmas 2006 Reunion

Many homes in Sabah as well as Malaysia are fairly "empty" throughout the year except December and the following January. Within these two months or so, many of their children who are away overseas either studying or working or have migrated return home for a time of reunion. Mine is no exception.

Koko Black

We had hot chocolate with cinnamon. Paul's hot chocolate with chilli was served with a twang! Sam had the original hot chocolate and Jiaming chose ice chocolate mocha. A wonderful experience of drinking chocolate!

Architectural Wonder along The Great Ocean Road

As our car wound its way along the Great Ocean Road, a striking sight emerged on the rugged coastline - a building seemingly suspended in mid-air, perched precariously on a cliff with sweeping views of the ocean below. This was the Pole House, an iconic architectural landmark near Fairhaven, Victoria, and one of the most photographed homes in Australia.

A little research revealed its fascinating story. Built between 1972 and 1978 by engineer Frank Dixon, the original structure was supported by a single massive concrete pole - a daring feat of design and engineering. Rising 13 m above the ground, the house is accessible only via a narrow concrete bridge, giving the sensation of walking into a space that floats above the sea. Bold and unconventional, the Pole House remains a celebrated example of architectural audacity on the Great Ocean Road.

Apollo Bay, Victoria, Australia

While wandering around Apollo Bay’s foreshore, we stumbled upon a cluster of curious wooden sculptures rising from the ground like weathered totems. From a distance, they looked like nothing more than driftwood planted in the grass - but up close, each piece revealed intricate carvings of fish, whales, and other marine shapes, as if the ocean’s spirit had been captured in timber. The salty breeze, the sound of waves in the background, and the easy laughter we shared made the moment feel wonderfully unplanned - a small, quirky treasure in the heart of this seaside town.
